Outsight Intros Creamsource Micro LED Lamp at ASC Clubhouse

ASC Staff

A team from Outsight visited the ASC Clubhouse on Wednesday evening, April 19, to provide a pre-NAB sneak peak at their latest offering, the Creamsource Micro. Joining Outsight’s line of LED units — which comprises the Creamsource Doppio+, Sky and Mini+ — the Micro is the most compact of the bunch, at 220mm x 205mm x 100mm without attachments.

Introduced by former ASC President Richard Crudo, associate member Bill Russell took the podium and welcomed a crowd that included ASC members Andrzej Bartkowiak, Russell P. Carpenter, Gil Hubbs, Peter Moss, Steven Shaw and Lisa Wiegand.

Russell spoke highly both of the Micro and of Outsight managing director Tama Berkeljon, whom Russell described as “chief engineer and all-around technical whiz, who founded the company and developed these products — and is the driving force behind our latest offering.” Russell also thanked Rob Draper, ACS, who lit the set for the product demonstration, and Birns & Sawyer, who provided batteries, stands and cables for the event.

Berkeljon — who was in attendance along with Outsight design engineer Sasha Marks — then addressed the audience, noting how far the company has come since he started building LEDs “in the lounge of my one-bedroom flat in Sydney [Australia] in 2004.”

He described the bi-color Micro as “lightweight at around 5 1/2 pounds with the head — with the [optional] yoke it weighs a little bit more.” He noted that the unit features a CRI/TLCI color-accuracy rating of greater than 90, and pulls 80 watts of power. He demonstrated the light’s dimming capability, color variation from daylight to tungsten, and waterproof design, as well as its optional holographic lens system.

When asked about the motivation to design a smaller LED, Berkeljon replied, “We feel for the crews that have to move big lamps around. They do it every day. And we noticed friends in the market, and a lot of people shooting smaller [projects], wanting a smaller crew and greater control over their lighting equipment, and needing smaller fixtures to do it. So we decided it was time to build something small.”

The Creamsource Micro is less than half the size of the Creamsource Mini+, with dimensions (without yoke) of 220 x 205 x 100mm (W x H x D), and weighs in at approximately 2.5kg. It features a rugged and waterproof design, with an IP65 rating, which means it can be used in all weather. Light output is the same quality as the rest of the Creamsource range, with color temperature adjustable from 2,700 to 6,500K and a CRI/TLCI of greater than 90. It draws 80 watts of power. The Micro maintains constant power output across the whole CCT range. Another key innovation of the Micro is its wide 10-32V operating voltage, allowing users to power the fixture from a single 90WH battery, or directly from a car.

There are three main rigging options: quick-release yoke, twist-on mount and single 3/8 thread. Available accessories include a choice of V-lock or Gold Mount style quick-release battery plates for easy portability, a Snapbag lightbank from DOPChoice, Outsight’s high-efficiency holographic lens system, and a hardwearing soft travel case.

The Micro is priced at USD $995 for the basic kit, which includes the Creamsource Micro Bender head, power supply and 3/8” baby mounting socket. Other kits are available.

Outsight will run a special promotion each day at NAB 2017, where participating visitors to Booth C10842 will have a chance to win a Micro.

The Micro is the fourth product in the growing Creamsource range, and will join its siblings — Creamsource Doppio+, Creamsource Mini+ and Creamsource Sky — at the NAB booth.

Outsight LED luminaires have been used on such recent features as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Doctor Strange — and on the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok — and TV dramas including Stranger Things and Zapped.

The ASC will be at the NAB Show in booth #C11830.
