Dryburgh, Schaefer to Speak at Cinematography Fest in Bristol

Guest speakers at the inaugural Bristol International Festival of Cinematography next month will include ASC members Stuart Dryburgh and Roberto Schaefer, who will conduct lighting seminars and participate in conversations about their work. Sponsored by the University of the West of England's Centre for Moving Image Research, the festival will run Sept. 15-18.




A panel discussion about the state of the art will kick things off Sept. 15 at Watershed, 1 Canons Rd., Harbourside, at 6 p.m. The remaining festival events will all take place at the Arnolfini Centre for Contemporary Arts, 16 Narrow Quay.




On Sept. 16, Dryburgh will teach a lighting seminar in the morning and discuss highlights from his career with UWE professor Terry Flaxton in the evening. Dryburgh's body of work includes BlackhatThe Secret Life of Walter MittyBridget Jones's Diary, Portrait of a Lady and The Piano, for which he received Oscar and ASC Award nominations.




Schaefer and costume designer Caroline Eseline-Schaefer will discuss their collaboration on Lee Daniels' drama The Paperboy on Sept. 16, and Schaefer will teach a lighting seminar on Sept. 18. Schaefer's credits include Finding NeverlandQuantum of Solace and The Kite Runner.




Cinematographers Geoff Boyle and Nic Knowland, BSC, are also scheduled to participate in the festival, which will include presentations on high-frame-rate cinematography, postproduction workflows, low-budget lighting, and working with film and the photochemical process.
