ASC Welcomes New Member Chayse Irvin

The Canadian cinematographer’s credits include BlacKkKlansman and Beyoncé: Lemonade.

Born in Canada, new member Chayse Irvin, ASC, CSC is known for his numerous collaborations with renowned artist and filmmaker Kahlil Joseph as well as work in commercials, music videos and features.


Irvin has photographed numerous commercials for clients including Apple, Google, Gatorade, Heineken, Sephora, Samsung and Ford. His short-from work also includes “John Lewis & Partners: The Boy and the Piano,” starring Elton John, as well as music videos for artists such as Jay-Z, Leon Bridges, The xx, Porter Robinson, Just Blaze, and more. His camerawork on the Kan Wakan music video “Like I Need You” earned him a Camerimage nomination for Best Cinematography in a Music Video.


Chayse Irvin, ASC, CSC

His debut feature as a cinematographer, the 2013 drama Medeas, earned him the prestigious Camerimage award in the Cinematographer’s Debut competition. The cinematographer then began his collaborations with Joseph, first with m.A.A.d., a 15-minute video set to songs from Kendrick Lamar’s album good kid, m.A.A.d city that was part of the Kahlil Joseph: Double Conscience exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. Their other short-form collaborations include Fly Paper and Sampha: Process, the latter of which earned Irvin the Gold Lion for Cinematography from the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. That same year, the cinematographer also won Silver and Bronze Lion awards at the festival, for his camerawork on “Squarespace: Who is JohnMalkovich.com?” and “Apple Watch Series 2: Go Time,” respectively.


In 2016, Irvin and Joseph again teamed up on HBO’s critically acclaimed film Beyoncé: Lemonade, a 65-minute “visual album” that serves as a visual companion to the singer’s album Lemonade.


The cinematographer’s feature work also includes the 2017 drama Hannah, as well as director Spike Lee’s Oscar-winning drama BlacKkKlansman, based on the true story of a black police officer who infiltrated the KKK.


Irvin’s upcoming credits include the Netflix biographical drama Blonde, about the life of Marilyn Monroe.
