As part of the Society’s education and outreach efforts, members lend their professional experiences and creative perspectives to the next generation of filmmakers.

Last month, the Society welcomed students from San Diego State University and the School of Visual Arts New York City for candid discussions about careers in the motion-picture industry. These talks are part of the ASC’s ongoing Education & Outreach committee efforts, bringing together student filmmakers from around the world to the historic ASC Clubhouse in Hollywood, view items from the ASC Museum collection, and meet Society members.

Society members volunteering their time to this effort included, from left: Gregg Heschong, Dean Cundey, George Spiro Dibie, Steven Fierberg and Christian Sebaldt.

Students in attendance had a wide array of professional interests, including cinematography, directing, editing, screenwriting, animation and production design. Each discussion is entirely fueled by audience questions and the experiences of the panelists, providing each group of participants with a unique conversation and experience.

Society members participate on a volunteer basis and provide insights from their professional careers and creative perspectives as visual storytellers. Panelists at these recent events included Paul Cameron, Dean Cundey, Thomas Del Ruth, Gregg Heschong, Steven FierbergCharles Minsky and Christian Sebaldt. The conversations are organized and moderated by Education & Outreach Committee chair George Spiro Dibie.

The talks centered on practical topics, such as how to best work with a director or lead a crew; technical matters, including keeping up with rapidly evolving motion-picture technology; and creative decisions, like how to create a sense of mood with lighting and camera movement.
