Veteran journalist David E. Williams was recently hired by the American Society of Cinematographers to replace its outgoing website managing director, Rachael K. Bosley, who will continue to work with the Society and its flagship magazine, American Cinematographer, as a freelance contributor.

Williams’ new title will be associate publisher and web manager.

Williams was a staff editor at AC from 1995 until 2000, when he left to become the executive editor of features at The Hollywood Reporter. Over the past 15 years, he served as the editor of several other publications, including the sci-fi journal Cinefantastique, the technology trade Digital Video and the award-winning pop-culture magazine Geek. In addition, Williams worked as a contributor to both AC and Friends of the ASC.

“Dave brings a very diverse skill set back to the ASC,” says American Cinematographer editor-in-chief and publisher Stephen Pizzello. “He has hands-on experience not only as a writer and editor specializing in all aspects of cinematography, but in brand strategy and the technical intricacies of print and digital publishing. His addition to the staff will help us cover our niche in dynamic and compelling ways, which will greatly benefit both our print readers and online followers.”

As associate publisher, Williams will work on an array of upcoming ASC Press releases, including the 11th edition of the American Cinematographer Manual (edited by M. David Mullen, ASC) and monographs focusing on the careers of Gordon Willis, ASC (written by Pizzello) and Owen Roizman, ASC (written by Williams).

As web director, Williams will oversee the ASC’s Internet presence, digital assets and social-media activities. “This is where I hope to bring the Society and AC into a new light,” says Williams. “There’s so much potential for online growth, not only in terms of covering new productions and products of all kinds, but also by unlocking all of the great content from AC’s past that has — until now — only been available in print. American Cinematographer has been in continuous publication for almost a century, and only a tiny fraction of that vast archive of historical information is available online. Curating this rich trove of ‘legacy content’ will be a top priority.”

Williams can be reached directly at [email protected].
