Sigma Corp. of America has announced the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary lens.

Measuring less than 3" long and weighing just over 10 ounces, the lens offers an extremely compact option for crop-sensor mirrorless-camera users.

Sigma’s first APS-C-size mirrorless zoom lens has a full-frame-equivalent zoom range of 27-75mm, which makes it ideal for a wide range of photo and video applications. The F2.8 aperture makes for easier handheld low-light shooting and provides a shallow depth of field.

To keep the lens as light as possible, Sigma engineers constructed the barrel from a polycarbonate called Thermally Stable Composite, which has a thermal conductivity close to that of aluminum; this ensures stable performance and good operability when used in changing temperatures. By using metal for some of the internal structure, the team was able to make parts much thinner and with more rigidity, ensuring the lens can stand up to frequent, heavy use.

The fast, quiet autofocus function makes the lens perfectly suited to a range of applications, including shooting in quiet environments, recording videos and capturing fast-moving subjects.

The Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary lens will be released this month and will list for $549.
