May 2022 AC Arrives with Focus on Inspiring Careers

With the ASC Awards over, our May 2022 issue presents career profiles on the Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award honoree Ellen Kuras, Career Achievement in Television Award honoree Peter Levy and Presidents Award honoree John Lindley. 

Also in this issue is a special focus on the collaboration between cinematographer and the visual-effects department on Shining Vale; a look at previsualization with a pair of pieces — one on the previs process for the StEM2 short film The Mission, and another on virtual-camera (aka “vcam”) systems with an emphasis on their use in previs work; a special bulletin on set safety from the perspective of set-safety officers; a remembrance of the life and career of George Spiro Dibie, ASC; and coverage of the short film Triangle.

• Presidents Award honoree John Lindley, ASC discusses his work on such features as Field of Dreams and Pleasantville, as well as his work leading ICG Local 600 through one of the most challenging and uncertain times in the industry’s history.

• Cinematographer Suki Medencevic, ASC, ASBiH, SAS and visual-effects supervisor Jason Piccioni discuss their collaboration on the Starz horror comedy series Shining Vale.

• In our continued coverage of safe set practices, AC speaks with set-safety officers in the Australian and New Zealand film industries.

• Shot Craft: A look at the previsualization work on the StEM2 short film, The Mission, which is a 16-minute production crafted by ASC members and associates, image scientists, colorists, manufacturers, and technologists, who collaborated to provide a cinematic piece of media that may be freely used to test theatrical projection, theatrical emissive displays, professional monitors, consumer monitors, and postproduction image-processing software and hardware.

• The Virtual World: A discussion on how filmmakers can interact with CG environments using a virtual camera (aka “vcam”) — a system that is particularly useful for previsualization, as well as for creating final shots.
