Kodak Ektachrome Resurgence

Professional E100 film re-released with 7294 Color Reversal Film in Super 8 and 16mm.

Discontinued in December of 2012, Ektachrome 7294 (100D) is now available again as Super 8, with 16mm planned for delivery by end of 2018. Manufactured by Kodak, this color-reversal motion picture is joined in re-release by the Kodak Ektachrome E100 35mm film for still photography, which is distributed through Kodak Alaris.

Super 8 and 16mm Ektachrome 7294 comes in 100' or 400' rolls and is a 100 ASA motion picture film for daylight temperature photography at 5500K. Designed for “moderately enhanced color saturation performance while maintaining a neutral gray scale and accurate flesh reproduction,” 7294 has a sharpness that they say exceeds any other 100 ASA reversal stocks.

“Ektachrome film was the choice for generations of filmmakers,” says Steve Bellamy, President, Eastman Kodak Company’s Motion Picture and Entertainment Division, in the press release. “The distinct and unparalleled look of films like Tony Scott’s Domino and Spike Lee’s Inside Man could not have been achieved without Ektachrome. We are extremely excited to reintroduce this film to those who know and love it, and to a new generation of motion picture artists.”

“We recently brought Kodak Professional T-MAX P3200 film back to market, and the response was overwhelming,” continues Dennis Olbrich, President, Kodak Alaris Paper, Photo Chemicals and Film, in the press release, thanking a resurgence in analog motion picture and still photography for creating the new demand. “Based on the response we’re seeing to beta test images on social media, we expect the return of Ektachrome E100 to be equally well received.”

In addition to interest from still photographers, Kodak anticipates a strong demand for Super 8 and 16mm in commercials, music videos and features. Super 8 is available as of October 1. Find spectral dye density, granularity, MTF chart and more in the specifications.
