Virtual production is evolving rapidly, and LED screens enabled with high dynamic range using Brompton Technology’s Tessera processing are playing an integral role. HDR offers a significant improvement over standard dynamic range in terms of image quality and flexibility in post.
“Compared to SDR, HDR technology offers much larger contrast ratios and color gamuts that more closely mimic what we see in the real world and what cameras are capable of capturing,” says Brompton Technology Chief Technology Officer Chris Deighton.
HDR video content (whether pre-rendered or generated in real time) can specify precise absolute brightness and color values for every pixel, giving better control over the display and more predictable results once the screen is integrated with other on-set elements, additional lighting and even LED panels of different types or from different vendors.
In order to be capable of delivering genuine HDR performance, LED panels need to be enabled for Brompton Technology’s Dynamic Calibration, which ensures color accuracy while providing tools that allow the LED screen to be instantly reconfigured to achieve different color or brightness targets.
“The film industry is perhaps the most demanding environment for LED screens, and therefore it also requires the most capable and flexible processing,” Deighton observes. “We are supporting our partners, such as Epic Games and DNEG, as they embrace HDR in their VP workflows.”
